ES CURRALS • SAN CARLOS

Tucked into the countryside near San Carlos, Es Currals Alpacas Ibiza is one of the island’s most unexpected rural experiences. A quiet farm where children can meet alpacas up close, wander through fields and discover a small weaving studio where their wool is transformed into textiles.

The farm was created by San and Bart, who moved from Belgium to Ibiza in 2018 to build something both agricultural and creative. What began as a dream became the island’s first alpaca farm, a place where animals, craft and slow rural life meet.

The setting feels wonderfully simple. A traditional Ibicencan finca surrounded by fields and dry-stone walls, where the alpacas graze quietly and visitors move gently through the space. For children especially, the encounter is unforgettable. Alpacas have a calm and curious presence. They approach slowly, soft-eyed and patient, nibbling hay or carrots offered by small hands. Just beyond the paddocks sits Wishfulfilling Weaving, the studio where the farm’s wool finds its second life. Inside, wooden looms and soft fibres fill the room, connecting the animals outside to the textiles created within. It is a rare place where farming, craft and childhood curiosity intersect in the Ibicencan countryside.

THE ALPACAS

Originally from the Andes mountains of South America, alpacas are known for their exceptionally soft fleece and gentle temperament. Unlike larger livestock, they are quiet animals. They move slowly, often gathering together in small groups, observing visitors with a mixture of curiosity and calm. Children quickly become fascinated by them. Their expressive faces, soft wool and slightly awkward elegance make them feel almost storybook-like. At Es Currals, the herd lives in open paddocks where visitors can observe them grazing, resting or wandering across the fields.

WISHFULFILLING WEAVING

The farm is also home to Wishfulfilling Weaving, a small studio dedicated to traditional weaving techniques. Here, alpaca wool becomes scarves, textiles and woven pieces made slowly on hand-operated looms. The studio adds a creative dimension to the farm, linking animal care to craft in a very tangible way. Visitors can sometimes see the weaving process in action, threads stretched across wooden frames while the shuttle moves back and forth. It is a reminder that the animals outside are part of a much longer story, one that connects land, fibre and handmade work.

VISITING WITH CHILDREN

For families, Es Currals offers something simple but deeply memorable. Children are invited to meet the alpacas, feed them hay or vegetables and spend time observing them quietly. The pace is gentle and unhurried, far removed from the noise of larger attractions. There is space to wander, watch and ask questions about the animals. Many children become absorbed in the small details: the texture of the fleece, the way the alpacas communicate with soft humming sounds, or the careful rhythm of their chewing. Visits are usually organised by appointment, which keeps the experience calm and personal.

WHAT LINGERS

What stays with you after leaving Es Currals is the quietness of the place. The slow movements of the alpacas. The soft rustle of hay in the paddocks. The unexpected connection between animals and handmade textiles. For children, it is often their first close encounter with alpacas, an animal they may only have seen in books before.

And in Ibiza, an island often known for very different things, that gentle moment in the countryside feels quietly special.
