CALA BASSA • West COAST

Cala Bassa is hard to beat with kids. The sand is beautifully soft and white, the water about as clear as it gets, and the shallows stretch far enough out for younger swimmers to play without quickly finding themselves out of their depth. On a calm day you can see straight through to the sandy bottom, with little feet still visible beneath the surface as the kids make their way further out.

It easily earns its place among the best family-friendly places in Ibiza, particularly outside July and August when the beach can become incredibly busy. There is plenty of parking behind the beach, somewhere close for food and drinks, bathrooms when you need them, and very little required once you’ve put the towels down.

IN & OUT OF THE WATER

Most of the day can be spent between the sea and the rocks that run around the edges of the cala. The shallow water makes paddling and swimming easy, while the rocks are full of little pools to look into and places to explore before heading back across the sand. Take snorkels too. With water this clear, getting kids back out of the sea is usually harder than keeping them entertained in it.

Water sports are available during the season, although Cala Bassa doesn’t really need much adding to it. Buckets get carried over to the rock pools, snorkels disappear into the water and somebody is usually swimming back out before they’ve properly dried from the last time.

LUNCH AT CALA BASSA

CBbC runs along the back of the beach , with several places to stop for lunch, snacks and cold drinks during the day. It means nobody has to pack up and leave when hunger hits, and bathrooms are close enough for all the inevitable trips that come with spending a full day at the beach with kids.

Parking is straightforward too, with plenty of space behind the beach and only a short walk down to the sand. The one thing worth planning around is the time of year. July and August can be exceptionally busy, while outside those two months Cala Bassa has far more room to enjoy everything that makes it such an easy beach with kids.

WHAT LINGERS

The kids racing each other into the water, snorkels in hand, before coming back to investigate whatever they’ve spotted between the rocks. Sandy feet, buckets beside the rock pools and heads disappearing beneath water clear enough to watch them swimming from above.

Then back onto the sand before doing the whole thing again.
